Sergio Rodrigues was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1927. Today, Rodrigues is still one of the most important designers in South America. Since the 1960s Sergio Rodrigues has been designing furniture using typical Brazilian forms. Even Oscar Niemeyer is among his great admirers and furnished several of his buildings with furniture from Sergio Rodrigues.

“Brazilian furniture was lacking the kind of national identity the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer, Lúcio Costa and their colleagues had achieved”, said Sergio Rodrigues. He founded the company “Oca Industries” and for decades, he designed and manufactured modern Brazilian furniture. 

Sergio Rodrigues, who also studied architecture, always stuck to the traditional materials he had at his disposal: the wood of the Jacaranda tree, eucalyptus and leather. With his chair ?Mole Chair“ Sergio Rodrigues managed to become part of the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art.

As an architect Sergio Rodrigues also often used wood - his preferred material. His designs for modular house building ranged from quite simple to highly complex wooden constructions. One of his most successful designs is the Brazilian Embassy in Rome. 

In 1968 Sergio Rodrigues left his company ?Oca Industries“. Since then he has been working as a freelance designer with his own studio. Over the last 50 years Rodrigues produced almost 1200 designs. Today Rodrigues still works as an architect and designer. He dedicates his time to the furnishing of office or private buildings, hotels and to architecture in general.

Sergio Rodrigues is still active and we hope that he will continue to enrich the world of design with exciting forms made of wood and leather for a long time.
